It is the "family reunion" feel that gets me into my car once a year to drive 1000 miles for my annual bluegrass festival fix.

I absolutely love the smallish festivals that attract crowds of one or two thousand people, events in which the performing bands mingle with the audience while other bands are on stage. At times, they seem to be having more fun than those of us who paid to get in. I love the reasonable prices - because that allows me to justify my gasoline and hotel expenses for the week I'm on the road.

But I know these guys have to make a living, and I feel for them. I try to buy their product at the festivals (CDs, tee-shirts, caps, etc.)as much as I can afford because I know they have tremendous expenses of their own out on the road.

You know that I'm a traditionalist - and, as such, I don't enjoy the more "progressive" style of bluegrass. I understand, though, that the style has its place and that it will bring younger fans to the genre. I have definitely noticed the aging of the audience and that scares me a bit. Something has to be done to change that trend.

I just don't want to see bluegrass events go the way of big time country music events with extremely high ticket prices and artists who won't give the average fan the time of day. Bluegrass music, and those who make and enjoy it, are special folks, in my opinion. I hope that part never changes.Sam https://www.blogger.com/profile/17448913705757509608noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7211910878271447535.post-37103398450269650022009-08-14T14:38:39.990-04:002009-08-14T14:38:39.990-04:00My comment (p2) got in the middle of the quote.
