I sent you an email on Facebook back in August asking for your address. You replied, and I mailed the CD back then. I will definitely be at MerleFest this year, and make an effort to get up to Conway as well. Really looking forward to meeting!River Boy ishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06867597086756664495noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7211910878271447535.post-36890370855011720142011-01-09T11:51:59.343-05:002011-01-09T11:51:59.343-05:00Shayne - I've been wondering how I came into p...Shayne - I've been wondering how I came into possession of the River Boy CD and now I guess you handed it to me. Next time, make sure I know it's you. I look forward to our chat. Perhaps the RBS show in Conway on March 19 or Merlefest?Ted Lehmannhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12948477139450253563noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7211910878271447535.post-57829140426311110052011-01-09T11:46:04.128-05:002011-01-09T11:46:04.128-05:00Great post Ted. I certainly gained a new level of respect for Jamie, seeing how smart and thoughtful he is on the business side of things.

I have spent a fair amount of time thinking about this "business of bluegrass." I've always loved the subject of economics and business. Supply and demand is such a simple and profound concept. There does seem to be a dilemma in the bluegrass world, and my attendance at IBMA (2010 was my first) confirmed it. There is more supply than demand. Granted, it's more complex than this, especially for newcomers. There are issues around quality, commitment to the endeavor, funding to get started, etc. At the end of the day, there is a limited amount of money flowing from fans into the festivals and the record stores (demand). We can increase that demand through quality of the music, and innovation in delivery (online radio is big!), and probably a bunch of other ways. But increasing supply (more bands) faster than we increase demand results in lower income for a bunch of people.

For our band, we focused first on the quality of our songs and our recording. So, we believe in our product and want to spread it to the world. We're trying to do that now through the internet and radio; I made a couple of important contacts at IBMA. Next will be getting the quality of our live performance "product" up to snuff. I plan to have fun making that investment.River Boy ishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06867597086756664495noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7211910878271447535.post-11393566335666708122011-01-06T10:25:36.796-05:002011-01-06T10:25:36.796-05:00Ted & Joe, your both right. Planning ahead of arriving and attending meetings as many as possible - it's about networking and taking notes..many notes.Al Hawkeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15743825432451888200noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7211910878271447535.post-67440778734634938252011-01-05T11:34:47.965-05:002011-01-05T11:34:47.965-05:00Exactly, Joe! Any band could have found many ways to create a broader audience and build public awareness of their brand name by attending this seminar. I might suggest that professional jealousy had something to do with the attendance, but that wouldn't be nice.Ted Lehmannhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12948477139450253563noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7211910878271447535.post-46232406038815115302011-01-05T11:03:17.935-05:002011-01-05T11:03:17.935-05:00I'm told that Dailey & Vincent's manag...I'm told that Dailey & Vincent's management staff held a seminar and almost no professional (or aspiring professional) acts had a representative in attendance. What an incredible opportunity! Are our "professional" performers too jaded to think there's something to learn from a smashing business success model like D&V? Are they just in it as a hobby, and as such don't want to put too much non-playing time into the business? Are they embarrassed to be seen looking for help and advice in making their careers successful? You can't fault IBMA for the lousy attendance at that event, but you can praise them for setting it up.Joe Zaunernoreply@blogger.com
