IBMA 2010 - Fan Fest - Saturday

With my computer in the shop, I have had to decide whether to try to cover the IBMA World of Bluegrass in chronological order or use the pictures I have available on Irene's computer to get a post up.  I've chosen the latter, so here comes Fan Fest from Saturday.  I have lots more from earlier in the week as well as some overall commentary about the entire event that I'll be posting during the next couple of weeks, even as they become less timely.

Fan Fest is a large, two and a half day indoor festival held on the heels of the IBMA World of Bluegrass trade show and after the Awards Show.  Bands perform half hour to forty minute sets gratis to benefit the Bluegrass Trust Fund, which assists needy musicians,  and IBMA for promotion of bluegrass music throughout the world. Customarily, I like to picture bands and their sidemen, largely because I believe sidemen receive much too little attention as crucial members of their bands. Fan Fest is so large and so diverse that this practice is just not possible.  The pictures here, rather, represent an impressionistic view of the events of Fan Fest on Saturday.  The culmination of the day's music was a reunion of J.D. Crowe and the New South with many of the people who played in this ground breaking band of the seventies and eighties.  In addition, J.D. and Friends included bluegrass pioneers Jesse McReynolds, Bobby Osborne, and Bobby Hicks.  It's rare to see so many bluegrass legends together on a stage anywhere.  Credit for creating this large and complex event goes to co-producers Carl Jackson and Mark Newton, who last week pulled off a huge musical coup in re-creating such music aggregations, filling in when necessary with contemporary musicians of stature equal to the originals.  I'll pretty much let the pictures speak for themselves, so on with the show.

Kids on Bluegrass: A Tribute to Houston Caldwell

Houston Caldwell was a participant in Kids on Bluegrass at IBMA for several years. Last May, he was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident just after his return from the Merlefest Banjo Contest.  His parents, in their grief, are seeking to establish a festival in his memory to benefit the Houston Caldwell Foundation, The Galax Fire Department, and to provide music scholarships and programs.

Saturday at Fan Fest began for us a little after 9:00 A.M and continued until well after 2:00 A.M., a pretty typical day at IBMA.  There's so much stimulation that you only noticed you're tired from time to time.  More to come.

  1. Hey Ted - Great pics from Saturday! I see I missed a whole lot of great stuff. A couple of things you might wish to correct: I'm pretty sure Jon Weisberger spells his last name with an "e," and the photo you have labeled as Sharon White playing the bass is actually her sister, Cheryl White. Looking forward to seeing more of your IBMA pictures...
