An element making The MACC one of the most exciting events available are the evening performances of composite bands put together either for this event or assembled from performers who have stayed beyond their own sets. Special guests combine to offer renditions of songs not available in other recordings or any other place. These special performances are a nightly event at Musicians Against Childhood Cancer, but reach their culmination each year on Saturday night with the MACC Opry. Darrell Adkins, along with his wife Phyllis, long-time bluegrass promoters in the Columbus, OH area, found their lives transformed when their daughter Mandy died of brain stem cancer in November of 2000. The couple, devastated by their loss, decided to dedicate their lives to the fight against childhood cancer and to supporting the research effort at St. Jude, where Mandy had been treated. Over the past ten years, well over $600,000 has been contributed to St. Jude's Hospital and the YMCA, where the event is held annually. The MACC will be held at Hoover-Y Park just south of Columbus from July 18 - 21, 2012. This year's line-up will be announced later in the Spring.
