MACC 2012 - Friday - Review

Friday at the MACC looked like it might be a disaster. As Darin & Brooke Aldridge took the stage at noon, the rain started to pelt down in sheets. It looked like a complete washout. But before they were finished the rain had come to a stop and Kenny & Amanda Smith came to the stage to an audience coming in from their campers and from the field where day campers park. We never saw any rain again for the rest of the festival, and as the afternoon wore on the crowd grew huge in anticipation of the evening's performances from Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, The SteelDrivers, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, Blue Highway, and, especially, J.D. Crowe & the New South who are engaged in their final tour prior to J.D.'s retirement. Sadly, Tony Rice was not able to join the group as advertised.  Nevertheless, the weather remained warm and increasingly dry. It was an evening filled with joy and celebration, which the large crowd participated in to the fullest. Again, because of the number of bands, I'll concentrate on pictures, keeping narrative to a minimum.

So after beginning with poor prospects the MACC turned into a triumph of music, memory, and celebration.
