Looking Back at 2013 (3) - The Summer in the (mostly) Northeast

The Sky Over Gettysburg

Our first festival after we cross the Mason - Dixon Line heading home is Gettysburg. The festival held here twice a year is one of the fabled bluegrass festivals tracing it's history back to the early eighties.  The lineup is always strong, featuring a combination of tried-and-true headliners with new bands or ones we haven't run across too often. A few years ago, promoter Rich Winkleman built a lovely new stage, increasing the quality of the musical experience exponentially. The Granite Hill Campground is a lovely setting with a natural amphitheater and a swimming pool set where you can spend part of the day in the water listening to the music.

Strawberry Park Bluegrass Festival - Preston, CT

Strawberry Park, held the last weekend in May each year at the Strawberry Park Camping Resort in Preston, CT operated last year after been in receivership for the two years previous. Attendance was down and the future of the festival remains in jeopardy, but good, imaginative management providing a first rate experience can still rescue it. Here's a look at last year.

Jenny Brook Bluegrass Festival - Tunbridge, VT

Through careful, planned growth, a widened selection of bands, and thoughtful development through innovation, Jenny Brook Family Bluegrass Festival has moved from being a small, local festival to a regional powerhouse that was nominated for IBMA Event of the Year in 2013.  By moving to the Tunbridge World's Fair Grounds, promoters Candi and Seth Sawyer have clearly shown that they know how to run a festival.

Pemi Valley Bluegrass Festival

For years we have been unable to attend the marvelous Pemi Valley Bluegrass Festival because of a schedule conflict. This year the conflict disappeared, and we were introduced to this wonderful event in a near perfect venue in eastern New Hampshire. The lineup included a very strong representation of regional bands and enough national bands to give it increased strength. We were only able, to our loss, to attend for one day, but this year we're going for the whole week. We're already scheduled to attend this very fine event in 2014.

Michelle Canning's Debut as an Emcee

It was a busy and productive summer, which for us means fewer festivals, less music, and more home and family. We left early to attend our friend Bob Cook's 80th birthday party in Wilmington, NC followed by a busy fall schedule. More coming.....
