The IBMA Awards Shows and the Red Carpet 2013

While the glittering IBMA Awards Show, held in the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium on Thursday evening September 26 is the signature event of the World of Bluegrass, other awards are equally valued and as important to the recipients. This year the Special Awards Luncheon was packed and the Bluegrass Music Awards sold out. Enthusiasm was high as old favorites, a sprinkling of newer names, and a few surprises emerged. In the past, the day of the awards shows has been a more quiet day. This year, with the event shortened by two days, Thursday's program continued with seminars, meetings, showcases, and the opening of the very busy Exhibit Hall. After the AwaTrds in the evening, The Bluegrass Ramble continued out in the clubs and pubs. It was a very full and rewarding day.

The Momentum Awards

The Momentum Awards were established in 2012 to recognize young artists and business people at the beginning of their careers, promising new talent in bluegrass.

Distinguished Achievement Awards according to the program exist "to honor those in bluegrass music who have proven to be forerunners in their particular field of endeavor, and/or fostered bluegrass music's image with developments that will broaden the music's recognition and accessibility." Generally, they recognize a lifetime of achievement. The introduction of recipients is lengthier than any other award winners, with pictures of them and their work through the years. These awards are often quite moving as the recipients are often those whose contributions have effected the bluegrass lives of many in the audience and the wider bluegrass world.

A more detailed description of the contributions of those receiving Distinguished Achievement Awards can be found here. As is often the case, these awards were accompanied by heart warming introductions, more than a few tears and chills, and loud acclaim. The event, though small, is deeply important to recipients and attendees.

The Red Carpet

Katy Daley, the AM Drive Time dj for WAMU's Bluegrass Country and previous two time Broadcaster of the Year herself,  hosted the Red Carpet, interviewing nominees for awards as they headed into the pre-awards show reception in the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium, a complex of three theaters just a short walk from the hotels and the Raleigh Convention Center. A beautiful building, this complex, though lacking the historical importance of the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, more than made up for it with comfortable seating and unobstructed site lines. All pictures in this section were taken by Irene Lehmann, whose work at World of Bluegrass vastly extended the scope of our coverage.
